Reviewing My Comic Con Haul! (From Comic Con’17, Mumbai, India)

*Disclaimer: I own all the pictures. This post isn’t sponsored. Everything said over here is just my opinion. Viewers discretion for some slightly inappropriate content.

Hey, folks!

This review, as you can see in the title, is very different from my usual reviews and posts. Last year, I attended Comic-Con in Mumbai(India) and it was one of my best hauls ever. Admittedly, I have only attended Comic-Con twice but this haul is really the best one I have had so far. Nothing beats the feeling of buying merchandises, official or not, of your favorite character! This post will feature Tokyo Ghoul, Loki Laufeyson(Marvel Movies) and Archies. If you’re wondering why I am not reviewing a Subscription Box today, well, the answer to that is simple. I currently have no boxes left to review but there are several boxes on their way here. Besides, I really need to sort some of the things out because I’m running out of cabinets and closets to keep the boxes in. The one thing I really admire is the kind of crowd that Comic-Con brings in. With the exceptions of the wannabes and cool kids, you come across a lot of talented artists, who set up their stalls and sell their art or get paid to make custom artworks, the cosplayers are really very talented as well, especially the ones who put in all this effort to make huge props and armor for their characters and of course, the popular artists that come in from different countries to attend the cons and meet their fans. There’s also a Cosplay Contest where judges are brought in to judge the get up of the cosplayers and their props and boy, the competition is very tough out there. I always find myself walking around feeling a little dazed and extremely nostalgic.

Finally, let’s get into it!

ComicCon

For those of you  who don’t know,

Comic-Con India (CCI) is a comic based convention that is held annually. Jatin Verma, the founder of Comic Con India, launched the first comic con in India in Delhi in 2011 along with Comic-Con New York. Currently, some of the cities where Comic Con India is held are Delhi, Mumbai, Pune, Hyderabad, and Bangalore. Several internationally renowned artists come in to attend CCI and meet their fans with separate booths for their own. Fans can get autographs and pictures with their favorite artists and cosplayers as well. In the 2017 Comic Con Mumbai, artists like David Lloyd ( Illustrator of ‘V for Vendetta’ ) and  Nick Seluk ( Author of ‘The Awkward Yeti’ ) came in to meet their fans! Many merchandise stores cruise with the CCI crew to set up their stalls in the convention with various items like Funko Pop, Accessorizing, Anime Pop Mall, etc. These stores also have their setups online!

I attended only the first day of Comic-Con Mumbai’17 and it wasn’t as crowded as it had been about 2 years ago. Part of me was relieved because who wants a crowd? and then also, where did the crowd go? While those thoughts were lingering in the back of my head, the new layout, style, and theme of the venue and the super fan pass really impressed me. SuperFan passes hold privileges such as your own check-in and out counter with quick access and a kit with a black and silver theme which made me regret not getting those passes. The kit included the CCMI ’17 badge with a bag and a  few other merchandises including the DC poster and special edition Archie Comic!

Here are my ratings so far,

Theme: 9/10

Ambiance: 8/10

Activities: 8/10

Stalls: 9/10

Stage Shows: 8/10

Authenticity: 9/10

Fan Kit: 9/10

So, let’s get into the haul!

DC Poster

The Justice League Poster

The Justice League is a group of superheroes who are from the American comic books by DC Comics and they were created by writer Gardner Fox and Mattel Studios. Some of the superheroes in the justice league are Superman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Flash, Green Lantern, Black Canary and Batman. Recently, in 2017 ‘Justice League‘ The movie was released starring Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman, Ben Affleck as Batman and Henry Cavill as Superman. I received this free poster with my purchase for the CCI pass. This is a special edition Justice League original crew poster that was made for CCI. It also has the trademark of Comic Con India, DC Comics and Penguin Random House India.

I wasn’t a very big fan of DC Comics until I watched the Justice League last year. I mean, Aquaman was half the reason why I started liking it but just the general feel and plot of the characters also really pulled me into the fandom. This poster is really good with a great paint job and artwork is done on it. Nothing can beat the old school American comic art style. I actually own a lot of posters and I don’t have a place to put them up yet, So, it’s still in its covers most of the times except for when I need to take pictures. One of the other things I really liked is the cover these posters came in. They had a handle on the cover which made it easy to walk around the convention with them without crushing it under the load of the other items I had bought that day.

Archies

Archie Comic (Mumbai Edition)

The Archie Comic was founded in 1939 in Phelam, New York by founders John L. Goldwater, Louis Silberkleit and Maurice Coyne. These comics come under the genre of Humour, Superhero, Horror Fiction and Crime. Archie Comic Books are a worldwide sensation with several kids and grown-ups who read these comics as kids. Some of the really popular characters are Archie Andrews, Jughead Jones, Betty Cooper, Veronica Lodge, and Reggie Mantle. This edition of the Archie Comic was specially made for Comic-Con Mumbai by Mark Waid and Fiona Staples. Chapter one is ‘There is this girl’ and while I won’t give out any spoilers, the graphics and the art style is really good with decent plot and wit that we are all familiar with.

I hadn’t read an Archie Comic in forever. Back in school, I used to buy loads of Archie Comic Digests and read them all day through class and while I was on vacations as well. Archie is nostalgia. Though while I really like the new art style for the comic in this edition, I really missed the old school look that you can see on the cover and luckily, the comic had that need covered with the next story in the book. Overall, this comic really brought back my old memories from when I was younger and the art style really went well with the times now as well. The plot is pretty decent and nothing extraordinary but the style makes up for that. We don’t see all the old characters except for the mainstream ones.

Loki Poster

Marvel Loki Laufeyson Canvas Art

Loki is a character that appears as the adoptive brother of Thor in the American comic series by Marvel and he was created by writer Stan Lee with scripter Larry Lieber and penciler Jack Kirby. Loki has appeared in several Marvel Comic adaption films such as Thor, Avengers, Thor: The Dark World and Thor: Ragnarok. In all of the movies, he is played by actor Tom Hiddleston. Loki is also a Norse God, he is the God of Lies and Mischief, and he is also the son of Frost Giant, Laufey. In Norse legend, Loki was a trickster God associated with magic and fire. Over time he became eviler, and he was eventually chained to a rock by the other Gods. This artwork was made by the Pop Art Studio. They make canvas artworks of various characters from movies, shows, etc. If you’re interested in them, click here.

I have to be honest. You will see a lot of Loki merchandise in this post. I am a huge fan of Loki and Tom Hiddleston. As you can see the picture, I haven’t wrapped this yet and I most likely won’t for a while longer because I want to protect it. Nonetheless, this is an incredibly good artwork of Loki from the Thor: Ragnarok movie. Quality wise the canvas and the artwork are amazing and easily my favorite item from the haul. There is also a hook on the back of this canvas to hang it up on the wall with the logo of PopArtStudio.com as well. I kid you not when I say that I screamed when I saw this at the stall while going through their catalog.

Art

The Starry Night Painting by Vincent Van Gogh Coaster

The Starry Night is an oil on canvas painting by the Dutch painter Vin Van Gogh. Painted in June 1889, it depicts the view from the east-facing window of his asylum room at Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, just before sunrise, with the addition of an idealized village.  It is regarded as among Van Gogh’s finest works and is one of the most recognized paintings in the history of Western culture. Sadly, I don’t remember which stall I bought this from but I do remember paying Rs 100 for it. I have found a similar one on Etsy.com, click here.

Buying homey products aren’t really my thing but I could not resist the temptation of buying this because first off, this is a sick looking painting on a coaster and it’s a very famous painting by a very famous artist. You can’t really see it in the picture but the coaster has a glossy finish and it really suits the look and it is very tile like as well. It’s pretty sturdy and it definitely adds to the table/desk! I wish I had bought more of these.

Tokyo Ghoul

Kaneki From Tokyo Ghoul Signed Poster

Tokyo Ghoul is a dark Japanese anime and manga series by Sui Ishida. It comes under the genres of Dark Fantasy, Horror Fiction, and Thriller. Ken Kaneki is the main protagonist of Tokyo Ghoul and the husband of Touka Kirishima. This poster was a part of a ‘buy three manga’s a get a poster free offer’. The poster is large with the Tokyo Ghoul name and Sui Ishida’s autograph with Kaneki in the background with his signature style.

I am actually not a Tokyo Ghoul fan, mostly because I haven’t seen the anime. Yes, the horror. The only reason why I got lucky with this poster is that my senior purchased 3 manga’s and since she already had this poster, I asked her to get this for me. Lucky me, indeed. It’s because I haven’t seen the anime, that I don’t quite have much to say about it but the artwork is really good, I am so glad to have this! Just like with my other posters, I don’t have the space to put up this poster as well but hopefully, I will soon be able to put it up to the wall.

Funko

Loki Laufeyson Funko Pop Figure From Thor: Ragnarok

Funko is an American company that manufactures licensed pop culture toys. Funko is most known for producing licensed vinyl figures and bobbleheads. The paint job of the figure isn’t exactly the best and it’s hard to really spot any defects in the picture but on close inspection, the paint job is kind of off. Everything else is just fine and ideal except for the passable paint job which I’m surprised to see on an original Funko Pop figure. If you’re interested in one then click here or here for the Indian viewers.

Ah, I see that we’re on another Loki merchandise! It wasn’t until a couple of days later that I noticed the bad paint job on the figure but since it’s Loki, I forgave them and tried to move on but it still bugs me. While it didn’t cost me a lot, it was still a tad bit too expensive and to see such an error coming from such a popular brand, it was a bit of a shock for me. It brings down the quality and I can’t unsee it anymore. I still love it but I wish it was perfect. Also, I paid around Rs 950 for it.

Door tag

The Already Disturbed Door Tag

I actually don’t remember where I bought this from but I reckon, it’s from the same stall I bought the coaster from. This is a sturdy and tile like door tag that adds a touch of quirk to your door. If you’re interested in purchasing it then click here. It’s probably from the same place like in the link but I can’t be sure.

Just like a lot of the things I bought in this haul, I haven’t used this tag yet. Mostly because I’m scared that it might fall and crack or break. I don’t really use door tags, so, I don’t know if they usually have a tendency to break or crack but this does give me the feeling that there might be some damage from a fall. All that aside, this is a really good door tag with all the quirkiness you need without overdoing it and it really brings out the art of be subtle. I really regret not having bought more of these but looks like there are plenty of them online, so, Amazon.in is a life savior! I paid around Rs 150 or 200 for this.

Ten Count

Ten Count Vol. 2

Ten Count is a Japanese manga by Rihito Takarai and it was first published on the 30th of August, 2016. This comes under the genre of Romance Novel, Yaoi and Graphic Novel. As you can see, this is a manga that is meant for a mature audience with parental advisory(cropped out from the image, sorry). I purchased this manga for Rs 750. If you’re interested in purchasing the manga then click here.

I have been contemplating as to whether I should be posting it on here or not but since there isn’t anything overly inappropriate on the cover, I will just quickly run through this one as well. The only reason why I bought this manga is that it was recommended to me by a close friend of mine and I actually quite enjoyed reading the manga. Not necessarily because of the mature content but because of the art style and plot in general. This is a really good manga for those who are familiar with the yaoi genre or don’t mind it.

Loki Art

Joker (DC Comics) and Loki (Marvel Comics) Artwork

The Joker is a fictional character who appears as the main antagonist in Christopher Nolan’s 2008 superhero film The Dark Knight. Based upon the DC Comics character of the same name, he was played by Australian actor Heath Ledger. Some of Joker’s abilities are Criminal mastermind, Expert chemist, Utilizes weaponized props and toxins. His significant other is Harley Quinn. Also, this artwork is by Sophie Almaz! Here’s her Facebook page or click here to see more.

This deadly duo is my favorite! I got really lucky with this artwork because I remember wandering around the convention towards the end and I happened to stumble across the stall and noticed the artwork hanging up there. I think I paid around Rs 200-500 for it. There were several other duos as well but this one was THE one for me because, well I love Loki and Joker is just an amazing character and it’s hard not to like him. Comics really have a way to make you like the villain, like Killmonger in Black Panther.

So, with the last item reviewed, here’s a picture of how the real haul was.

Real Haul

The only thing I did not include in this post is the Death Note necklace and the Sebastian Michaelis from Kuroshitsuji Chibi Figurine. I actually don’t remember where the figurine is and the Death Note necklace doesn’t really look the same anymore. But the figurine was from Anime Pop Mall and the necklace is from Accessorize.

My Verdict?

Comic-Con Mumbai may not be the best Comic-Con in the world but it’s sure the best one we can get so far in Mumbai. Besides, each year we can see steady progress in the Comic-Con Mumbai crew and that’s really something! I really look forward to attending Comic-Con this year and hopefully, I will have a huge haul to review for you guys. If there was something I want to be changed and added in the system would be cheaper rates because some of the prices are way too high and at the end of the day, they’re just comics and toys. Yeah, that makes me sound like I’m not a fan but you know that what I’m saying is the truth. The one thing I would like to be added is perhaps plushes and things along those like with better quality figurines and not cheap figurines that look like they came right out of a Happy Meal.

Well then, that’s all for today, folks! As always, if you have any queries or feedback then make sure to comment below and if you liked this post then leave a like as well. Who knows maybe I will be able to meet some of you this year at Comic-Con Mumbai ’18!

Until the next post,

laters, folks! :3
